As we enjoy these beautiful fall days, we all know it won’t be long before Old Man Winter comes knocking on our Colorado doors.

While the weather is still nice, we’d like to offer these tips to protect your home from Colorado’s howling winds and frigid temperatures.

First we’ll talk about the obvious. When freezing temperatures are first predicted, it’s time to drain and shut off your sprinkler system and other outside water lines to avoid frozen or broken pipes.

You also should insulate exterior spigots and other pipes that are subject to freezing but can’t be drained or shut off.

Other outdoors tasks you can complete while the weather is nice include:

  • Caulking joints and minor cracks on exterior walls and siding.
  • Cleaning out your storm drains, gutters and other drain pipes.
  • Inspecting your roof to see if there are any loose, damaged or missing pieces.
  • Checking your attic vent openings for any possible bird nests or other blockages.

Don’t forget the inside of your home. This is a good time of year to:

  • Check your windows and doors for air leaks. You may need to install putty, caulk or add weather stripping.
  • Check your basements for seal cracks or leaks in the walls and floor.
  • Get your furnace system serviced to make sure it is working at its maximum efficiency and not emitting carbon monoxide.
  • Clean your furnace filters.
  • Head up to your attic to see if insulation needs to be added or replaced, and that the ventilation is adequate. Without proper ventilation, your insulation materials could deteriorate prematurely. Without proper insulation, you could see significant heat loss in your home, leading to higher heating bills.

We hope these tips keep you warm and cozy when the colder weather arrives. As always, if there is anything you need insurance-wise, please call the Insurance Advisors at 720-210-9898.
