IA Team

Insurance Advisors would like to wish you a very happy new year.

This is the time of year when people always talk about resolutions and goals. We also think it’s a good time to remind people about the importance of insurance reviews.

We know. It’s not an exciting topic, but it is important. Your requirements can change over time, so you need make sure you periodically review your insurance policies to make sure you are paying the best price for the protection that you need.

This applies to all types of insurances, including home, auto, umbrella liability, life, health, business and disability. But we are going to focus on the basics – home and auto insurance.

With all of the fires, floods and hail storms over the last couple of years, Colorado has seen some pretty significant home insurance events .  You need to make sure you are adequately covered in case any of these traumatic events heads your way.

As a reminder, damaged caused by most storms and fires is covered by most home insurance policies, but flood insurance is not.  While flood insurance is available from most insurance agents, it has to be purchased separately through the National Flood Insurance Program, which is managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

At Insurance Advisors, we recommend you have the maximum home replacement coverage on your house and its contents. Please note that replacement cost means the amount that it will take to replace your house on the property where it now stands, which is usually considerably less than the market value of your home.

We also recommend that you take an inventory – or update an existing inventory - of your collectibles, furniture, assets, home office equipment, etc.. While you’re doing that, it’s also a good idea to take photos of all your major items. You should bring this inventory with you when you meet with your insurance agent.

Now let’s take a look at auto insurance. There could be big differences in rates, depending on the age of your vehicles and the age of the drivers on your policy.

If you are driving an older car that doesn’t have much value, you might want to reduce your collision coverage or increase your deductible. You can use the money you save on insurance to start saving money for a new car.  If you have a new car, however, make sure you have adequate coverage that will allow you to replace the car, if it gets totaled, without causing a great financial burden.

If you haven’t done so already, you might want to look at consolidating your home and auto insurances with the same company to get a discount.

These are just some of the items you should think about at review time. We look forward to working with you in this new year to make sure your needs and the needs of your family are protected. We can be reached at 720.210.9898.
